From the WTF is Wrong with People Department:
Apparently #GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend was trending on Twitter this week from people who want Hollywood to push gay superheroes on the world. Oh, and #GiveElsaAGirlfriend – a rallying cry to make today’s most beloved Disney princess a lesbian in Frozen 2 – has become a thing, too.
“The Internet really wants them to have same-sex partners,” Time magazine enthused. Um, no. That is just a tiny fraction of noisemakers who are trolling the rest of us.
Really it’s liberals in the mainstream media who “really want them to have same-sex partners.” A Vanity Fair writer recently complained the new Captain America: Civil War wasn’t ambiguously gay enough and that it “bristles with heterosexual virility.”
Time magazine lamented, “A recent report by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation found that Disney failed to include a single LGBT character in its major 2015 movies, including those from its Marvel and LucasFilm branches (despite what Finn-Poe-shippers would have you believe).”
GOOD! It’s Disney! Their movies should be about wholesome fun that everyone enjoys, not pushing a gay agenda on kids and alienating people. But I’m sure Disney will cave soon, a company like that won’t hold out long against a loud tiny progressive minority before buckling.
And it is a very tiny minority. In fact, probably because of over-representation in the media, most Americans estimate that 20 percent or more of the population is gay (and a third of Americans think it’s over 25 percent), when really less than 4 percent of the population is gay or bi.
But the directors of Captain America have been receptive to the idea of a gay character.
“I think the chances are strong,” Joe Russo told Collider when asked about the chances of an LBGT character entering the Marvel Universe. “I mean, it’s incumbent upon us as storytellers who are making mass-appeal movies to make mass-appeal movies, and to diversify as much as possible,”
Sorry, but gay superheroes don’t have mass-appeal, which is exactly why Hollywood has taken so long to try it.
Maybe focus more on the quality story-telling that has made the movies such a success than on shoehorning in whatever the latest diversity fad is to appease the PC police.
