Erich Pratt, the executive director for Gun Owners of America, recently appeared on CNN with anchor Carol Costello, raising an important point about the gun control debate.

After insisting that “there’s no reasoning with the president” on his gun control agenda, Pratt explained something that is rarely mentioned in the back and forth over the Second Amendment.

While gun control proponents argue that constitutional rights are not absolute, the Gun Owners of America exec correctly explains that regardless, you can’t put conditions on them.

Via the Daily Caller:

Costello pressed Pratt, “OK. There’s no middle ground then, huh?”

“Well, there’s not when — what middle ground is there for restricting your First Amendment rights? If it’s a God-given, constitutionally protected right—” Pratt said.

“I can’t yell fire in a crowded theater,” Costello interjected.

“But we don’t gag people before they go into the theater,” Pratt retorted. “We don’t run background checks to say, ‘Oh do you have this kind of history before?’ No, we punish the violator. The president is trying to gag the Second Amendment. He’s putting prior restraints on the Second Amendment. We’re not talking about punishing criminals.”

Pratt was on fire during the interview.

Costello claimed that opposition to Obama’s agenda must mean that “criminals should own weapons.”

Pratt fired back effortlessly, “Do you hear what you’re saying? All the people that committed mass shootings passed background checks.”

He ended the segment by offering Einstein’s definition of insanity.
