Vice-President Pence Had the Best Special Guests for the Super Bowl

Regardless of what side of the aisle you’re coming from – politically or as a sports fan – you have to love what Vice-President Mike Pence did on his way to attending the Super Bowl in Houston on Sunday.

Pence picked up and escorted a pair of wounded service members – one a Patriots fan, the other a Falcons fan – and brought them as special guests to the big game.

Staff Sgt. Anthony Mannino Jr., a New England fan, was injured in Iraq in 2008, while Army Staff Sgt. Frederick Manning, an Atlanta fan, was wounded in Afghanistan last year.

They each brought a guest, Mannino his wife, and Manning brought along his nurse, Army Sgt. 1st Class Charles Stanley.

What a classy move by Pence!

Marine Staff Sgt. Tony Mannino thought the call was a mistake when he was told he was going to the Super Bowl with Vice President Mike Pence.

“I was like, `This is the White House? Are you sure you’ve got the right person?’” he said.

It likewise took some convincing until Army Staff Sgt. Frederick Manning realized his invitation wasn’t a joke.

“I barely got any sleep last night. I was like a kid waiting for Christmas,” Manning said on Air Force II as he flew to Houston on Sunday. “Ever since I got the confirmation, it’s been awesome.”

In 2011, President Obama hosted a Super Bowl party which featured special guests of his own – entertainers J-Lo and Marc Anthony.

We’d say Pence’s efforts to reach out to wounded warriors and his appreciation for the military easily trumps Obama. Wouldn’t you?
