Democrats’ First Piece of Legislation in 2017 Seeks Slavery Reparations

There’s almost a religious vibe to the Left’s style of identity politics today. They’re obsessed over sins of the past – and they’re looking for atonement. Reparations are the most commonly advocated for sacrament in the agenda of liberal identity politics, particularly for slavery. Under them, people who never owned slaves will pay money to people who never were slaves.

Yes – you should pay for the 1.4 percent of Americans who owned slaves over 150 years ago, apparently. Not only did you not benefit from slavery in any way — most Americans didn’t — and those who did saw all the wealth created by slavery destroyed by the Civil War. And how exactly would reparations for slavery work logistically? Personally, my ancestors didn’t come here until the 1930s, so would I be exempt as I don’t have any connection to slavery down my family tree?

From The Washington Examiner:

Members of the Congressional Black Caucus and other Democrats this week re-introduced legislation that would set up a commission to consider whether reparations should be paid to black Americans for slavery.

Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., has proposed the bill in each Congress for at least the last two decades.A description of the bill said the legislation would set up a commission to both examine the possibility of reparations, but also an apology for the “racial and economic discrimination against African-Americans.”

It’s a response to the “fundamental injustice, cruelty, brutality, and inhumanity of slavery in the United States.”

And what about blacks who are the descendants of other blacks who came to America after slavery was abolished? Will they get reparations? And what about people who are bi-racial? Are they only eligible for fifty percent?

As Conservative Tribune points out:

Moreover, according to The Root magazine, known for its usually unapologetically pro-black stance on the issues, even some free black Americans “bought and sold other black people, and did so at least since 1654, continuing to do so right through the Civil War.”

And even one of the most leftist papers in existence, The New York Times, admitted two years ago that were a reparations bill passed into law, payments would “have to come from taxpayers, who have no culpability for those past crimes and little, if any, of the benefit.”

The sins of the past are just that – those of the past.

None us should be surprised when they’re still trying to get this bill passed another 150 years from now.
