It’s been less than 48-hours since Donald Trump became the next President of the United States. Since then, Trump has been organizing his transition team and meeting with top government officials to prepare for his tenure in the White House.
On Thursday morning, Trump flew from New York City to Washington, D.C. to meet President Obama at the White House for the first face-to-face meeting between the two individuals.
After the private meeting between the two presidents, Obama called the talks “excellent” which surprised many of the president’s most liberal and vocal supporters.
Speaking to reporters, Obama said “My No. 1 priority in the next two months is to try to facilitate a transition that ensures our President-elect is successful.”
Obama, who has been harshly critical of Trump also said he hopes the newly-elected president will be successful: “If you succeed, the country succeeds.” President-elect Trump was also extremely courteous and appreciative of Obama’s kind words:
“Mr President, it was a great honor being with you and I look forward to being with you many, many more times,” Trump said, adding that he and Obama had spoken about some wonderful and difficult things and “some high-flying assets.”
While Obama and Trump were political adversaries during the 2016 campaign, both men are now members of an elite group of individuals to serve as president. As such, it is nice to know that President Obama has reached out to the incoming president and has offered him help.
Although Obama was extremely gracious, his staff did not take it well as multiple pictures appeared on Twitter showing his staff in tears:
