North Carolina to Vote on Repealing State’s Bathroom Bill

Young girls in the state of North Carolina will no longer be safe if the Republican-controlled state legislature repeals House Bill 2, the state’s bathroom bill, during a special legislative session on Tuesday.

The bill, which mandated individuals use the bathroom that corresponds with their legal gender, prompted outrage from the left, and it appears that the state’s outgoing Republican Governor Pat McCrory will work with the Republican controlled legislature to repeal the law.

Newly-elected Democrat Governor Roy Cooper said the law would be repealed and McCrory’s office confirmed that the special session was called so that HB2 would be repealed.

The initial passage of HB2 came in response to a local ordinance from the city of Charlotte that allowed individuals to use the bathroom that corresponds with the gender they identify with, but on Monday the city officially revoked the ordinance.

From WNCN:

The council’s repeal measure requires the legislature to repeal HB2 by December 31 or its ordinance would stand. Cooper said Senate Leader Phil Berger and House Speaker Tim Moore told him a special session will be called to repeal HB2 in full.

“I hope they will keep their word to me and with the help of Democrats in the legislature, HB2 will be repealed in full,” Cooper said. Berger and Moore both released a statement that said “Roy Cooper and Jennifer Roberts proved what we said was the case all along: their efforts to force men into women’s bathrooms and shower facilities was a political stunt to drive out-of-state money into the governor’s race.”

Republicans, including State House Speaker Tim Moore and Governor McCrory have long promised to repeal HB2 if Charlotte would repeal its controversial ordinance.

However, as The Federalist points out, of the 89 GOP state legislators who voted for HB2, only 2 lost reelections this year, meaning that repeal of the law isn’t a guarantee.

If North Carolina Republicans repeal HB2, then there is nothing stopping an adult male from going into a girls’ bathroom and threatening the state’s young girls.

Even though Charlotte’s controversial transgender bathroom bill has been repealed, do you think North Carolina Republicans should repeal HB2, or should they keep the law in place to protect the state’s children? Share your thoughts with us below!
