K9s Just Got Upgrades in Fieldware Protection Across the Country

K9 Dog Armor

You never know what’s in store for police dogs when they are out there working in the field with their partners.

K-9 police units across America should read this article, and fight to make it mandatory for police departments to purchase bulletproof vests for their service dogs.

From Liftable:

Since dogs are in the front lines during violent situations they are at increased risk of being injured or killed. This is why more and more police forces are dressing their service dogs with bulletproof vests.

These vests can be lifesaving for many K9s who are fired upon. However, these vests are expensive and not every K9 unit has been able to provide their pups with the protection they need.

Thanks to a very generous gift from Anderson Cooper, the Norfolk Police Department is now able to purchase these vests for their entire unit. Unfortunately, it took the tragic death of one of their own to prompt this gift.

On Jan. 11, 2016, in Norfolk, Connecticut, Krijger, a dog in the police unit died in a shootout. He was a three-year veteran of the department and received full honors during his memorial service.

A strong advocate for animal rights and protection, Cooper decided to donate to “Spike’s K-9 Fund.” Founded by retired Navy SEAL James Hatch, it is an organization which works to give service dogs better protection while in the line of duty.

I think it’s cool to know that the service dogs are protected just like their partners. It’s something you rarely think about, but it’s very important and much needed. I might not agree with Anderson Cooper’s politics but I thank him for donating to help the service dogs.

Do you think bulletproof vests are needed for service dogs or is it too much?
