The GOP is slowly rallying around Donald Trump.
Cruz and Kasich are in desperation mode, splitting up remaining primary states in an effort to stop Trump from securing 1,237 delegates and the GOP nomination. They are being bolstered by the loud but floundering #NeverTrump group.
But the holdouts are dwindling and the most recent GOP member to back Trump’s bid is sure to send shock-waves through the entire Establishment.
“We’ve had enough intraparty fighting. Now’s the time to stitch together a winning coalition,” said Jon Huntsman, the former governor of Utah. “And it’s been clear almost from the beginning that Donald Trump has the ability to assemble a nontraditional bloc of supporters. … The ability to cut across traditional party boundaries — like ’80, ’92 and 2008 — will be key, and Trump is much better positioned to achieve that.”
Huntsman isn’t alone. He’s the latest in a long list of party stalwarts and defenders of the GOP establishment that have accepted Trump as the best remaining option in the field — and are encouraging Trump’s opponents to wind down.
Woah. I would never expect Jon Huntsman, a man who once served in the Obama administration, to call for the GOP to rally around Trump.
Is this the beginning of the end of the #NeverTrump movement? Will Trump secure the nomination before Cleveland? And if so, does he have what it takes to win?
Lots of intriguing questions in the weeks ahead.
